What to Expect at Your First Laser Hair Removal Appointment

Your first laser session doesn't have to be intimidating. Here's a complete walkthrough of what happens from the moment you arrive until you leave — including prep tips and what it actually feels like.

Before You Arrive: Preparation Checklist. Proper preparation ensures your first session is effective and comfortable. Here's what to do in the days and hours before your appointment at Peach Lasers in Calgary. Two to Four Weeks Before: Stop waxing, plucking, threading, or epilating. These methods remove the hair root, leaving nothing for the laser to target. Shaving is fine and actually recommended. 24 to 48 Hours Before: Shave the treatment area. The laser targets the hair root beneath the skin, so a close shave ensures maximum energy delivery to the follicle without burning surface hair. Day of Appointment: Ensure the treatment area is clean and free of lotions, deodorant, perfume, makeup, or self-tanning products. These can interfere with laser penetration. Wear comfortable, loose clothing that allows easy access to the treatment area. Avoid: Retinoids, glycolic acid, or photosensitizing skincare products on the treatment area for 48 hours prior. Active sunburn on the treatment area — reschedule if you're burned.

Arriving at Peach Lasers: What Happens First. When you arrive at any of our Calgary locations — Mission (Salon Bowie on 4 St SW), Macleod Trail (Citizen Salon Studios), or Marda Loop (Citizen Salon Studios on 33 Ave SW) — you'll be greeted by our team and asked to complete a brief intake form if you haven't already done so online. The form covers your medical history, current medications, and any skin conditions that might affect treatment. This takes approximately 5 minutes. If this is your very first visit and you're signing up for a Peach Club membership ($199/year), we'll process that first. Remember: your first session is free with membership, covering unlimited treatment areas.

The Consultation and Skin Analysis. Before your first laser pulse, your technician will conduct a thorough consultation. This includes: Visual Assessment: Your technician examines the treatment area to assess hair density, color, and growth patterns. Skin Type Determination: Using the Fitzpatrick Scale (Types I through VI), your technician identifies your skin type to ensure safe laser settings. AI Hair Follicle Scan: Peach Lasers' 4-wavelength Diode Laser includes an AI scanner that analyzes your hair and skin characteristics to auto-calibrate the optimal energy level, pulse width (2 to 125 milliseconds), and wavelength ratio for your specific profile. Expectation Setting: Your technician will explain realistic outcomes, the number of sessions likely needed (typically 6-8), and answer any questions. This consultation takes approximately 10-15 minutes on your first visit. Subsequent sessions skip directly to treatment since your profile is already on file.

The Treatment: What It Actually Feels Like. This is the part most first-timers are nervous about. Here's exactly what happens: Positioning: You'll be positioned comfortably on the treatment bed. For areas like underarms or bikini, you may need to hold certain positions to allow access. Protective Eyewear: You'll be given laser-safe goggles to protect your eyes from the light. Cooling Gel (Optional): Depending on the area, a thin layer of cooling gel may be applied, though our Crystal Freeze technology often makes this unnecessary. The Laser Passes: Your technician glides the handpiece over the treatment area using an In-Motion technique. The -4°C Crystal Freeze sapphire tip contacts your skin first, numbing the nerve endings before the laser fires. Most clients describe the sensation as a light flicking or tingling — similar to a cold stone massage or a thin elastic band snap on cool skin. Significantly more comfortable than older laser systems. Treatment Time by Area: Underarms: 5 minutes. Upper lip: 3 minutes. Brazilian: 15 minutes. Full legs: 30 minutes. Full back: 25 minutes.

Immediately After: What You'll Notice. When your session ends, you may notice: Mild Redness: Similar to a light sunburn, typically fading within 1-4 hours. Slight Warmth: The treatment area may feel warm to the touch for 30-60 minutes. Follicular Edema: Small raised bumps around hair follicles — this is actually a good sign that the laser reached the follicles. These subside within hours. Your technician will apply a soothing aloe gel or cooling lotion to the treated area. You're free to leave immediately — there's no downtime, and most clients return to work or normal activities right away.

Post-Session Care: The First 48 Hours. Proper aftercare maximizes results and minimizes any irritation: Avoid Heat: No hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, or intense exercise for 24 hours. Heat can aggravate treated follicles. Avoid Sun: Keep the treated area out of direct sunlight for 48 hours. If you must be outdoors, apply SPF 30+ sunscreen. No Harsh Products: Avoid retinoids, glycolic acid, vitamin C serums, and fragranced products on the treatment area for 48 hours. Gentle Skincare: Use a mild, fragrance-free moisturizer if the area feels dry. Loose Clothing: Avoid tight, friction-causing clothing over the treatment area for 24 hours. No Picking: You may notice hair appearing to grow back within 1-2 weeks. This is actually treated hair shedding — the laser-damaged follicles are pushing out the dead hair. Do not pluck or wax; let hairs fall out naturally or shave them off.

What Happens Over the Following Weeks. Days 1-7: Any redness or sensitivity resolves. The treatment area looks and feels normal. Days 7-14: Treated hairs begin shedding. You may notice what looks like regrowth, but it's actually dead hair being pushed out. A gentle exfoliation can help release these hairs. Days 14-28: True regrowth begins from follicles that weren't in the anagen phase during treatment. This hair will be treated at your next session. Week 4-6: Time to book your second session. At Peach Lasers, we recommend spacing sessions 4-6 weeks apart depending on the treatment area.
