What to Expect

How Many Laser Hair Removal Sessions Will I Actually Need?

Six to ten sessions, not a guaranteed number. Here's what actually determines your result, what laser can't fix, and exactly what we do if it isn't working for you.

Most people need six to ten sessions per area for lasting hair reduction. Your number depends on your skin type, skin tone, hair colour and hair texture. Anyone promising an exact figure before treating you is guessing. We give you an honest range at your free consultation, and we tell you if laser won't work for your hair.

How many sessions will I need?

Six to ten sessions per area is the realistic range for most people, spaced four to six weeks apart.

The reason it's a range rather than a number is that hair doesn't all grow at the same time. Each follicle cycles through a growing phase, a resting phase and a shedding phase, and laser only affects hair that's actively growing. At any given moment only a portion of the hair in an area is in that phase, which is why one session can never do it and why the sessions are spaced out.

Some areas need more than others. Coarse, dense hair on the face and along the jaw is often the most stubborn, particularly where hormones are involved. Legs, underarms and bikini areas typically sit in the middle of the range.

What determines how many sessions I need?

Four things: your skin type, your skin tone, your hair colour, and how coarse the hair is.

Hair colour matters most, because the laser targets the pigment in the hair. Dark, coarse hair absorbs the most energy and responds fastest. Fine, light hair carries less pigment and takes longer.

Skin tone changes the settings rather than whether we can treat you. Our 4-wavelength diode includes the 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength, which reaches the follicle without overheating surface melanin, so we treat all six Fitzpatrick types safely. Deeper skin tones are treated at different energy levels, not fewer sessions.

Hormones are the wildcard. Conditions such as PCOS keep stimulating new follicles, so facial and abdominal hair in particular may need more sessions and occasional maintenance afterwards. That isn't a treatment failure; it's the condition continuing to do what it does.

What won't laser hair removal do?

It won't remove grey, white or very light hair, and it isn't permanent removal — it's permanent reduction.

Laser works by targeting melanin. Grey and white hair has essentially none, so there's nothing for the laser to find. Very light blonde and some red hair responds poorly for the same reason. If that's your hair, we'll tell you at the consultation rather than sell you a membership — electrolysis is the honest recommendation there.

Even where it works well, the accurate term is reduction. Most people end up with dramatically less hair, and what remains is finer and lighter. A small number of follicles usually survive, and some clients choose an occasional maintenance session once or twice a year to stay where they want to be.

It also won't work on hair that isn't there yet. Laser can't prevent new follicles from being activated later by hormonal changes, which is why teenagers and people with hormonal conditions sometimes need touch-ups down the line.

How long before I see results?

You'll usually notice shedding within one to three weeks of your first session, with visible reduction building across several sessions.

After a treatment the damaged hairs push out over the following couple of weeks. It can look like the hair is growing back — it's actually being expelled. What follows is a period where the area stays clear, then some regrowth as the next batch of follicles enters the growth phase.

Each session should leave less than the one before. By session three or four you should be able to see a real difference in density and in how quickly the hair returns. That's the checkpoint that matters, and it's the one we use.

What happens if it isn't working for me?

If you're not seeing results by your fourth session, we'll reassess your settings — and if your hair type isn't responding, we'll tell you honestly.

Sometimes the fix is technical: energy levels, wavelength weighting or spacing between sessions. We'd rather adjust early than have you keep booking appointments that aren't earning their place.

If you've completed the sessions we estimated and you're not where we said you'd be, the next two are on us. We can offer that because there's no package to refund and no course you've prepaid — your membership covers the year and you only ever pay for sessions you actually book.

And if the honest answer is that your hair isn't going to respond, we'll say so and point you somewhere that can help. That costs us a client and earns us a reputation, which we think is the better trade.

Why do we tell you all this upfront?

Because the most common complaint about laser clinics isn't the price — it's being promised a result that didn't arrive.

The pattern is easy to find in reviews of clinics across Calgary: someone is told the results will be strong and lasting, buys a course of six or more sessions in advance, and discovers afterwards that it didn't work for their hair. By then the money is gone.

We'd rather you walked away informed than joined on the strength of a promise we couldn't keep. Being straight about six to ten sessions, about grey hair, and about what happens when it isn't working is the whole point.

Laser hair removal results FAQs

Does laser hair removal hurt?
Most people describe it as a warm snap against the skin. Our system uses built-in cooling, and your technician checks in throughout and adjusts if you're uncomfortable. Most clients find it far more tolerable than waxing.
How far apart should sessions be?
Typically four to six weeks, depending on the area. The spacing matters because it lines your next session up with the next batch of follicles entering their growth phase, which is the only time laser can affect them.
Can I shave between sessions?
Yes, and you should. Shaving leaves the follicle intact so there's still a target for the laser. Do not wax, pluck or use epilators between sessions, because removing the root leaves nothing for the laser to treat.
Does laser hair removal work on grey or white hair?
No. Laser targets the pigment in hair, and grey and white hair has essentially none. Very light blonde hair responds poorly for the same reason. We'll tell you this at your consultation rather than take your membership.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
It's permanent hair reduction rather than permanent removal. Most people are left with dramatically less hair, and what remains is finer and lighter. Some choose an occasional maintenance session once or twice a year.
Will it work if I have PCOS?
Yes, though hormonal conditions such as PCOS can mean more sessions and ongoing maintenance, particularly on the face and stomach. The condition keeps activating new follicles, so we plan for that rather than pretend it won't happen.
Can I have laser hair removal on tanned skin?
Usually yes, but tell us about recent sun exposure or self-tanner. Fresh tanning raises surface melanin, so we may adjust the energy or suggest waiting. The 1064nm wavelength gives us far more flexibility here than older lasers.
Is laser hair removal safe during pregnancy?
There isn't strong evidence of harm, but there also isn't enough research to say it's proven safe, so most clinics including ours recommend waiting. Please speak to your doctor, and we'll be glad to see you afterwards.
How much will six to ten sessions actually cost?
For a single area, roughly $444 to $640 in your first year — that's the $199 annual membership plus $49 per session, with your first session free. Two areas works out at about $689 to $1,081.
